Don’t Leave Home Without These Summer Home Security Tips:
Sweating the small stuff of summer home security
According to the FBI, U.S. residences are most vulnerable to burglary during the months of July and August when families head off for vacation or leave their homes vacant while on the real estate market.
If your summer plans include selling your home or leaving town, read these Boise Home Security tips before going.Eliminate clues that show your home is vacant
Don’t change your voice mail message to indicate you’re gone
If you have a traditional answering machine, remotely pick up your messages daily to prevent the “beep” from getting too long
Make arrangements with a trusted neighbor to collect your mail and newspaper daily or temporarily stop delivery
Use automatic timers to turn on and off indoor lights and TVs at varying times of day
Prune shrubs, trees and other landscaping to allow for an unobstructed view of your doors and windows from the street
Verify all door and window locks are strong and in good working condition; use them
Kick proof your doors and make certain all door and window frames are solid and strong
Make sure all locks are “non-bumpable”; replace old, standard locks with high security locks that carry a UL437 rating or other technologically advanced locks
Turn off or unplug your automatic garage door opener; lock your garage door and the door that leads from the garage into your home.
Install motion activated outdoor security lighting
Clean up your yard and put away all tools, ladders, bikes, etc.; if you will be gone an extended period of time, ask a friend or trusted neighbor to mow your lawn
Turn off your telephone ringer or turn the volume down
Install a verified electronic security system and use it; let your monitoring center know you will be away and how to reach you
Selling your home or going on a family vacation can be the highlight of your summer. Put these tips to use in order to reduce the curb appeal of your home to burglars and avoid the summer break-in blues.
